40 Fast-Food Capitals

by The Daily Beast

If America is fast-food nation, which city should be crowned capital? The Daily Beast ranks those most saturated with drive-thru joints and fast-food restaurants.

In Miami, there are twice as many Burger King locations than tanning salons. In Las Vegas, there are nearly as many Subway outposts as there are wedding chapels. And in New York City, you can see three Starbucks from a single street corner.

Fast food hasn’t just invaded our diets and expanded our waistlines; it has permeated our urban landscape and culture. On one hand, the prevalence of chains can be comforting—no matter where you go, chances are good that a Starbucks Skinny Caramel Macchiato is within reach. On the other hand, it’s a sign of the growing dominance of chains and waning appeal of independent restaurants. According tp NPD Group, there are 15,000 more chain restaurants now than there were five years ago—a 5 percent increase. During the same time period, there was nearly a 1 percent decline in the number of independent restaurants.

Some cities have tried to stem the influx of formula food stands, like Springdale, Utah, which passed an ordinance banning chains from setting up within city limits, but others have embraced them. So what American city is the most fast-food-centric?

To find out, The Daily Beast asked independent data collector AggData to compile the total number of fast-food locations of the nation’s 30 largest chains in nearly 500 cities. The list of the 30 largest fast-food chain restaurants was provided by Technomic, a food-industry research firm. Our final list was limited to cities with a population of at least 200,000, according to the U.S. Census, and was ranked based on total locations per 100,000 residents.

Sunday 23rd May, Danny supported the Brooklyn School Library Foundation fundraiser at the Union Square Barnes & Noble book store in NYC. As the children parents teachers and PTA members were busy buying books, Danny entertained all in attendance with his foodie game “Is it a fruit? or Is it a Vegetable?” All had a great day and lots of money was raised for new books for the foundation.

Saturday 15th May 2010: Danny performed 4, live stage, sets at the Sequoia Foodie Fest 2010, in aid of the raising money and support for The Boys and Girls Club of the Sierras. The day was a huge success for the organisers and volunteers as they attracted 1600 paying visitor’s on it’s very first day on the 2 day event. Bizarrely enough, this was the Sierra Valleys, which is one of largest agriculture producing areas in America, very first food festival, but we are sure with it’s success and Danny’s involvement, it won’t be it’s last!

Obesity Statistics – The Facts Presented by Modern Research on Obesity

By Steven R Arnold /http://ezinearticles.com/?Obesity-Statistics—The-Facts-Presented-by-Modern-Research-on-Obesity&id=1919602

Modern research on obesity presents us with obesity statistics that are simply mind-blowing. Obesity in America is at epidemic levels and it is far past time to begin addressing this life-threatening issue.

The causes of obesity are almost always the same:

Overconsumption and other improper eating habits;

Eating foods that offer no nutrition;

Failing to remain physically active;

All other factors for obesity and being overweight really are negligible when compared to the core causes of obesity listed above. Along with the outrageous obesity statistics, the levels of obesity diseases are also at all time highs.

Obesity diseases account for almost every known disease including:

Diabetes;

Coronary heart disease;

Myocardial infarctions;

Strokes;

Kidney failure;

Liver disease;

Cancer;

Arthritis;

Atherosclerosis;

Hypertension;

And so many more…

Here are some of the shocking obesity statistics that we must begin to reverse through proper eating habits, healthy food intake choices and daily physical exercise:

Over 58 million Americans are overweight;

Over 40 million Americans are obese;

Over 3 million Americans are morbidly obese;

More than 80% of Americans do not engage in adequate physical activity;

More than one quarter of all Americans are considered to be “completely sedentary”;

In adults between 30 and 40 years old, there has been greater than 78% increase in Type II diabetes cases since 1990;

More obesity statistics to consider:

More than 85 percent of all diabetes cases are due to obesity and being overweight;

More than 70% of all heart-related disease is heavily correlated with being overweight and/or obese;

Almost 45% of all breast and colon cancer cases are heavily related to obesity and/or being overweight;

More than 30% of all gall bladder operations are caused by obesity and/or being overweight;

More than one quarter of all obese people have hypertension (high blood pressure);

Childhood obesity statistics:

Only 4 percent of children were considered obese in 1982. Now, more than 30% are.

More than one quarter of all obese children are showing symptoms of the development of Type 2 diabetes mellitus;

Of those children developing Type II diabetes, more than 60 percent of them are also showing one or more signs of cardiovascular disease;

Our children are taught how and what to eat by us – their parents and advisors;

These obesity statistics are developed by professional health organizations and research universities. They are not to be taken lightly. These are epidemic numbers. Our children are dying. We are dying. Almost all of these health issues and diseases can be effectively reversed through the initiation of permanent lifestyle changes concerning what we eat, how much we eat, the manners in which we eat, the reasons we eat and our exercise levels. Obesity help is readily available from a number of professional sources. There is no great mystery involved. Protect your health and the health of your family starting today.

Thank you to every one who sent me Thank You notes and notes on how they were putting more YUM into there lives than YUK’s!

These thank you’s come from just a few of the 100′s of kid’s over the past year (K-6) that have played “Is it a Fruit or is it a Vegetable!!!?” tasted a power smoothie and have spread the word of “Don’t YUK my YUM”, I will continue to keep spreading the word of food education until I am convinced a change in food culture has arrived!

My team at Crash Bang Boome and I are working very hard at the moment on bringing a better curriculum and food culture to local government ,class rooms, offices, warehouses and homes. Join the conversation on Twitter,Face Book and You Tube @DannyBoome, tell us your thoughts hopes and needs, we are listening.
